Your dog\u2019s health depends on his immune system. Which means you need to do what you can to keep it in top shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

But every day he\u2019s exposed to toxins and other immune system stressors. And this means his body isn\u2019t at its best.<\/span><\/p>\n

So today, I will talk about some of the things that attack your dog\u2019s immune system \u2026 and easy steps you can take to reduce their effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Boost Your Dog\u2019s Immune System<\/b><\/h2>\n

Did you know that each day the US produces 74 billion pounds of chemicals?<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s a lot of toxins for you and your dog to deal with.
<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to mention \u2026 dogs get more vaccines than any other animal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Combine this with emotional stress and food additives \u2026 and you can bet your dog\u2019s immune system will take a hit.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Diet<\/b><\/h3>\n

Kibble is easy and convenient \u2026 but there are a lot of problems with these diets.<\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, kibbles are full of starches and fillers. Dogs don\u2019t need any starch in their diets \u2026 and most kibbles are around 50% starchy carbohydrates. <\/span><\/p>\n

Starchy foods lead to chronic problems like digestive issues, itchy skin or allergies. And because starch converts to sugar, and sugar feeds cancer cells \u2026 starchy foods can make your dog more susceptible to cancer.
<\/span><\/p>\n

And then there\u2019s the heat that kills off nutrients. When manufacturers make kibble, the ingredients must bake \u2026 at extremely high temperatures. But most vitamins, minerals and other nutrients can\u2019t survive the intense heat.<\/span><\/p>\n

So \u2026 they get added back in after the fact.<\/span><\/p>\n

To keep costs low, manufacturers use synthetic vitamins and minerals. The problem is that synthetic nutrients aren\u2019t as good for your dog as natural ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s because they are only part of the real vitamin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take vitamin C for example. Natural vitamin C contains:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Ascorbic acid<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Bioflavonoids<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Factor K<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Factor P<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Tyrosinase<\/span><\/li>\n
  • Ascorbigen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    These all work together to keep your dog healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

    But synthetic vitamin C is only ascorbic acid. That means your dog doesn\u2019t get all the nutrients he needs to keep his system healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And studies have shown that synthetic vitamins can actually harm your dog.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Guinea pigs are susceptible to vitamin C deficiency. When given real vitamin C they were better protected from pneumococcal infection.<\/span><\/p>\n

    When rabbits are deficient in vitamin B they develop cirrhosis of the liver. Natural sources of vitamin B prevented the disorder. Synthetic didn\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Offspring of rats deficient in vitamin D develop rickets. When females had synthetic vitamin D their offspring had skeletal malformations. When given the real vitamin the offspring were normal.<\/span><\/p>\n

    That means his immune system is at even greater risk.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And vitamins are only part of the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Kibble can also contain ingredients that weaken the immune system.<\/span><\/p>\n

    • Aflatoxins<\/b> \u2013 a mold that contaminates foods like corn, wheat, nuts and legumes.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Heterocyclic amines<\/b> \u2013 cancer-causing substances that develop when you cook fish and meat at high temperatures.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Acrylamides<\/b> \u2013 a probable carcinogen in vegetable foods cooked at high temperatures.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Glyphosate<\/b> \u2013 a herbicide used on crops to kill weeds. It can cause gut problems, brain disorders and cancer.<\/span><\/li>\n
    • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers<\/b> \u2013 a chemical used in flame retardants. It\u2019s linked to cancer, endocrine disorders and reproductive issues.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      To keep your dog\u2019s immune system healthy make sure he gets the nutrients he needs \u2026 without the chemicals. Feed fresh, raw whole foods whenever you can.<\/span><\/p>\n

      2. Water<\/b><\/h3>\n

      If you give your dog untreated tap water, you introduce toxins to his system.
      <\/span><\/p>\n

      Many municipalities add chemicals like fluoride to their water. And too much fluoride can cause \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

      • Skeletal fluorosis<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Gastrointestinal problems<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Bone cancer<\/span><\/li>\n
      • Kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n

        Holistic vets also recommend that you avoid water with chlorine and heavy metals.<\/span><\/p>\n

        To help reduce your dog\u2019s exposure to toxins in water, use spring or filtered water.

        3. Cleaners and Chemical Sprays<\/b><\/h3>\n

        To help reduce your dog\u2019s (and your!) exposure to cleaners and chemical sprays, start at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Look for non-toxic green cleaners. Avoid artificial scents and chemicals like \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

        Ammonia<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in hardwood wax as well as oven, window, and stainless steel cleaners.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Irritates your dog\u2019s respiratory system which leads to breathing issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Bleach<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in scouring powders, mildew removers, toilet cleaners, all purpose cleaners and detergents.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures and shocks in large amounts.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Phthalates<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in deodorizers, all-purpose cleaners and many dog toys.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Can cause cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Glycol Ethers<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in glass, carpets and all-purpose cleaners, liquid soap, and spot removers.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Can damage the liver, nerves, lungs, kidneys and digestive system as well as causing anemia.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Formaldehyde<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in hand soap, pet shampoo, plug-in air fresheners and household cleaners. New carpets and furniture are also treated with formaldehyde.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Irritates the skin and eyes and can affect nerve response rate.<\/span><\/p>\n

        1,4 Dioxin<\/b><\/p>\n

        Found in detergents, dryer sheets, cosmetics, paints and varnishes.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Can affect the kidneys and liver, as well as cause cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n

        And remember, your dog lives mostly on the floor so he\u2019s much closer to these toxins than you are! Use <\/span>natural cleaners<\/span> in your home. A little baking soda and vinegar go a long way!
        <\/span><\/p>\n

        When you\u2019re out and about it can be a bit more difficult to avoid chemicals. You have no control over what other people use.<\/span><\/p>\n

        When you can, don\u2019t let your dog lie or walk on surfaces or use items if you don\u2019t know what products are on them.
        <\/span><\/p>\n

        Another big problem outside is lawn chemicals and pesticides. These chemicals can cause:<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Birth defects<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Nerve damage<\/span><\/li>\n
        • Cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          To limit your dog\u2019s exposure to these chemicals \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

          • Don\u2019t use them at home in your own yard<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Don\u2019t let him walk on your neighbor\u2019s grass if it looks perfect! <\/span><\/li>\n
          • Avoid parks that use pesticides<\/span><\/li>\n
          • Don\u2019t let your dog eat grass or play in it unless you know it\u2019s pesticide-free<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            4. Plastics<\/b><\/h3>\n

            Not all plastics are dangerous, but many contain chemicals like phthalates and bisphenol-A.

            Phthalates<\/b><\/p>\n

            Phthalates aren\u2019t just in cleaners. They\u2019re also in packaging and many dog toys. They can easily leach into food and liquids and cause \u2026

            • Asthma<\/span><\/li>\n
            • Malformation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              Bisphenol A (BPA)<\/b><\/p>\n

              BPA can also cause many issues \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

              • Brain problems<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Cancer<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Asthma<\/span><\/li>\n
              • Reproductive disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                These chemicals are in packaging, food storage bins and food and water bowls.<\/span><\/p>\n

                When you shop, look for products that say BPA Free and use eco-friendly packaging. Better yet, switch to glass and natural fibers when possible.<\/span><\/p>\n

                5. Vaccines<\/b><\/h3>\n

                When you vaccinate your dog, it can cause lifelong chronic illness.
                <\/span><\/p>\n

                That\u2019s because vaccines force your dog\u2019s body to respond to the virus in the vaccine so he can develop antibodies. This can create a shock to the system \u2026 one that it isn\u2019t ready for.
                <\/span><\/p>\n

                Especially because most vets give vaccines with several viruses all at once. Your dog\u2019s body is built to handle one virus at a time, not 5, 6 or 7. And that overstimulates your dog\u2019s immune system and can set him up for chronic illness.

                • Formaldehyde<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Aluminum<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  They\u2019re designed to make your dog\u2019s immune response more sensitive to the small amount of virus. It sends your dog\u2019s system into overdrive, so he is more likely to respond to the virus and beat it.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  This may sound like a good thing \u2026 but it throws everything out of balance and your dog\u2019s immune system gets overwhelmed.<\/span><\/p>\n

                  If you want to keep your dog\u2019s immune system strong \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

                  • Don\u2019t over-vaccinate your dog.<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Limit the number of viruses he gets in one vaccine.<\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Never vaccinate him when he\u2019s not 100% healthy. Even if he has an upset tummy or a hot spot, that means he\u2019s not healthy!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                        Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid. It\u2019s linked to \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

                          Amitraz<\/b><\/p>\n

                          Amitraz is a potential carcinogen. It can be deadly to dogs if consumed.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          To avoid these toxins, use natural flea and tick sprays or make your own at home.<\/span><\/p>\n

                          7. Emotional Stress<\/b><\/h3>\n

                              • Excessive licking<\/span><\/li>\n

                              • Excessive panting<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                                If your dog shows any signs of stress, try to find the reason and remove it from his day-to-day.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                If that isn\u2019t possible, give him a massage or try flower essences and essential oils to keep him relaxed and his immune system healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n

                                Take the time to remove the immune stressors in your dog\u2019s environment. This will keep his immune system strong.<\/span><\/p>\n
